Confessing Evangelical

I'm taking some French "refresher" classes at the moment, and in a desperate bid to improve my abysmal vocabulary I bought the Berlitz French Vocabulary Handbook, which has lists of key words organised by subject, together with a few examples of "typical sentences" for each subject (eg food and drink, quantities, furnishings, travel etc). One subject is "Religion", and I was struck by the "sample phrases" for this topic:

The five pillars of Islam are belief in the One True God and that Mohammed is his Prophet, prayer, fasting, giving alms and pilgrimage to Mecca.

Les cinq piliers de l'Islam sont l'attestation de la foi qu'il il n'est de divinité que Dieu et que Mahomet est son prophète, la prière rituelle, le jeûne du ramadan, l'aumône légale, et le pèlerinage à la Mecque.

Religious fundamentalism can lead to fanaticism and intolerance in any religion.

L'intégrisme religieux peut mener au fanatisme et à l'intolérance dans n'importe quelle religion.

There is considerable disagreement about the ordination of women to the priesthood.

Il existe énormément de désaccords sur la question des femmes prêtres et de leur ordination.

While these phrases certainly give you a head-start in any likely conversation about religion - briefly touching on the controversies and divisions of Christianity, before discussing sympathetically the core beliefs of Islam and agreeing earnestly that no religion is worse than any other at breeding fanaticism and intolerance - it may be useful to have some further phrases to enable you to take your conversations on religious topics to greater depths next time you're in France. Here's some examples that came to mind (corrections/improvements to these translations are welcome!):

Evangelical Christians are as big a threat to society as Muslim extremists.

Les chrétiens evangeliques sont aussi grands une menace à la société que les extrémistes musulmans.

The Bible is homophobic hate-speech.

La Bible est le haine-discours homophobique.

It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you are sincere.

Il n'importe pas que vous croyez, à condition que vous êtes sincère.

In many Muslim countries, if you become a Christian, your family will disown you, and it is possible that you will be killed. But one can perhaps understand this hostility to Christianity, when one recalls the Crusades.

En beaucoup de pays musulmans, si vous devenez un chrétien, votre famille vous retiera, et c'est possible que vous serez tués. Mais peut-être on peut comprendre cette hostilité au christianisme, quand on se rappele les Croisades.
