Events, dear boy
A couple of events over the next couple of weeks for people living in SE London or NW Kent.
Elmstead Baptist Church, a church pastored by a friend of ours (Malcolm Jones, wearing a blue short-sleeved shirt near the centre of the photograph on the linked page) is holding a very interesting-looking talk entitled: "The Da Vinci Code: Fact or Fantasy", on Saturday 24 June, 7 pm until 9 pm.
Yes, I know, yet another church doing yet another Da Vinci tie-in. But this one features Dr Garry Williams, Academic Dean of Oak Hill College, and all-round Good Egg, so it should be a cut above the usual. Dr Williams has also written a short book on DVC entitled The Da Vinci Code : From Dan Brown's Fiction to Mary Magdalene's Faith.
For those who can't make it, an MP3 talk by Dr Williams on this topic is available here. I'm guessing that will cover pretty much the same ground.
And then next weekend (Friday 16 and Saturday 17 June), our own church is hosting two talks by Lutheran theologian Dr Bob Rosin of Concordia Theological Seminary, St Louis. Dr Rosin has been described as the LCMS's "finest Reformation scholar", and our pastor thinks very highly of him indeed, which is good enough for me.
On Friday, Dr Rosin will be talking about postmodernism, in a talk entitled "Where in the World are We? Rethinking our place in life". Saturday's talk is "The English Reformation: What was, and what might have been". Details (with link for map/directions) here. Both talks start at 7.30 pm and are free of charge.
